Stamps from Tonga
February 9th, 2010

I have been repairing my grandmothers’ stamp albums, this sheet fell down. I have no idea if these hearts are actually stamps, with lovely profile of Tonga’s Queen Salote? I will ask from granny as soon I finish fixing the albums.

Books of propaganda II – Kihnu
February 3rd, 2010

“Kihnu” by Enn Kärmas. Publishing House “Eesti Raamat”, Tallinn 1975.
Book tells us that while belonging into friendly family of Soviet Union lots of things changed in this tiny Estonian island – now over the roofs are hanging new television aerials, in front of the houses new motorbikes have been parked, modern stoves are efficiently smoking fish. Washing machines and refrigerators are not rarity items in the fisherman’s houses any more…
At the time this book was published there was only one guest house with the name “Rock City”(not a translation from the Estonian name but originally it had the name in English).

Sometimes
February 2nd, 2010

Sometimes things with commissions turn out so awkwardly. Every time I ask myself what have I done wrong. Mostly there is no clear answer, I think I have always tried to give my best.
The old photo of A on my studio desk just makes me smile, always.
Frida Maria by Margo Maria Weijer & Frieda Mellema(Rotterdam, Holland). I like their work very much.

Annelies Štrba
January 31st, 2010

I got the book “Ware Iri Ware Ni Iru” by photographer Annelies Štrba on 1997. I participated in the workshop of Bernhard Schobinger(I briefly wrote about it here) in Antwerp and among his own beautiful books he had few books of her wife. I purchased the book and year after year I am falling more and more in love with her images. She mostly takes photos of people around her – family, friends and many simple daily life treasures.
My family is in Hungary and I miss them.

MALE
January 30th, 2010
Already long time ago in the November the exhibition MALE was opened in the IIDA fashion and textile gallery, consisting of jewellery for men and curated by jewellery artists Piret Hirv and Eve Margus-Villems. Gallery Iida is selling also contemporary Estonian jewellery selected by the same artists.
I have to admit, that the theme MALE, was kind of hard for me, intriguing too, but.. I think most of the pieces I make can be easily worn by open minded men as much as by women.
I concentrated on untied bow-tie(which of course is often used by women as well). The form of it has been always very appealing, charmingly unfinished, pointing on something to be happened in a moment. The polka dot-holes on it- well my father got married with my mom with huge dark blue bow-tie with large white polka dots. Together with my brother we used to play (secretly from dad) with it .
Have a look at the exhibition till February 28.

Miners’ country – books of propaganda I
January 28th, 2010

“Man’s work determines the face and name of the country and soil, in which his roots are embedded.”
Beautiful photo album including images of mines, workers, engineers and their families, how they lived, worked and how they spent their free time. What a fiction…
Book by Samuil Migdal, graphic design Ülo Habicht. Published on 1968, Tallinn.

3 Pead
January 28th, 2010
They are just amazingly good! I could hear their song Uned(Dreams) just forever. And on the video, definitely the most beautiful wedding party I have ever seen.
Lots of good memories from our studies in the metal art department of the EAA.
