Symposium DAY 4 – THEME III. Reshaping the Gray Area: Creating, connecting, disseminating

May 20th, 2010

First: The Jewellery-The Gallery-The Future by Jurgen Eickhoff(Germany)

Jurgen Eickhoff graduated from Rietveld Academy. He is cofounder of contemporary jewellery gallery Spektrum(founded on 1981) in Munich. He is sharing his time between making the jewellery and managing the gallery. He was really concerned, that most of the gallerists dealing with contemporary jewellery, so called pioneers are around 60-70 years old, as well as the collectors. He was also concerned that artists who are active and arranging things for themselves and others will have very little time to make jewellery. Therefore we all need galleries but too few new ones are entering this narrow field now.

Second: Round Table: Dialogues of the Gray Area

Andrés Fonseca(Mexico-Columbia), Andrea Wagner (NL), Valeria Siemelink(Mexico-NL)

Andrés Fonseca(Mexico-Colombia)- jeweller described in extreame precisness the detials of his collaboration with Jantje Fleicchut.

Andrea Wagner(NL)-jeweller, indipendent curator; the curator for the European artists for the WGA. She introduced the artists and the aspects of the collaboration.

Valeria Vallarta(Mexico-NL)-the initiator of the WGA project. Last 15 years she has been travelling. Contemporary jewellery is not international but European right now. She recived 600 e-mails during the WGA project. Among them most exotic perhaps- an e-mail from one curator from Uzbekistan who wanted to present the show over there.

Jose Manuel Springer(Mexico), Andrés Fonseca(Mexico-Columbia), Andrea Wagner (NL) and Valeria Siemelink(Mexico-NL)

Work by Miguel Luciano(Puerto Rico)

Ineke Herkens(NL) and Hanna Hedman(SWE)

Carolina Hornauer(Chile), Miguel Luciano(Puerto Rico), Ineke Herkens(NL) and Hanna Hedman(SWE)

Carolina Hornauer (Chile)-jeweller

She found Chilien artists she did not know before within this project. First she studid medicine and then went to Barcelona to Massana. She was interested in Mapuche women and made an exhibition on this subject, including photographs. She have a blog here.

Miguel Luciano(Puerto Rico)  He used for the inspiration for WGA the illustrations from children books about the history of Puerto Rico.

Ineke Heerkens(NL)- jeweller. Graduated from Rietveld Academy(NL). Her partner in the WGA project did not respond, so she used the project for developing her own new work. She was deeling with the emotion -beeing on the road, the space between two spaces, sun blinds and lines. She used melted plastic bags in her work.

Hanna Hedman(Sweden)-jeweller. Graduated from Konstfack(SWE). When she was 19 she moved to the USA and stayed there for 2 years, making jewellery. For the WGA project she made a neckpiece- “You sleep when i am awake”. She saw out the World map, all the countries and rearranged them accoring to her own personal taste. In the end of the neckpiece there is Sweden and in the other end Colombia.

Third: Private Passion- the Art of Collecting Wearable Art by Liesbeth den Besten (NL)

Liesbeth den Besten was talking about jewellery collections, sales of the collections, collectors and also changes of the landscape in these fields. Some examples she showed and decribed:

Some time ago at the Sothebys Auction House the collection of the Duchess Wallis Simpson jewellery was sold, including 312 pieces.  She was a lady who refused to wear jewellery piece which stones were taken out from one historical piece of jewellery. All the jewellery pieces in this unique collection represent in one way or an other the story of their love.

Collectors-often people from elite group found it very provocative to wear contemporary jewellery in high sociaety public events- top catch the attention and to show off.

LB. also told about Lars and Helena Pahlmans collection. They started to collect international artists on 1980. Now among the 1000 pieces they have in their collection, there is a significant coverage of jewellery from Baltic Countries.

But what happens to the private collections? How can the public see them? When the collector stops purchasing new items or she/he dies will the collection be protected in the banks deposit lockers, sold? Many questions.

The Foundation of Francois van der Bosch(since 2000 Liesbeth is the president of the foundation) is 30 years old. They give a prize and purchase jewellery from each winner of the prize. At the years when the prize is not given they buy from young talents. When the Stedelijk Museum will be opened again then the collection will be presented there.

The collection of American big collector Helen Drutt has been presented in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

Fifth: In Search of the Missing DNA: From Contemporaneity to Commercialization by Ricardo Domingo (Spain)

He was educated in Barcelona, Massana. Started to deal with industrial jewellery. Now he is consulting large commercial jewellery companies how to create visual images and market your products via these tools. He was suggesting that craft is going to be soon avant-gard. Jewellery is compeating with beauty industry and tourism.

Fourth: To Break Down a Wall, is to Open up a View by Cristina Filipe(Portugal)

Then my memory card in the camera was simply full and the second card was in the hotel.

She introduced the ArsOrnata 2005 events in Portugal and their Association for Contemporary Jewellery.
